Forgiven Much
Matthew 5:38-39
![]() | Revenge is what our society deems as acceptable for when someone is wronged. If we were hurt by someone, shouldn’t we hurt them back? Shouldn’t they know what kind of pain they had put us through? Jesus challenges this concept with a call of avoiding retaliation. He goes to the extent of pointing to the idea that if you are wronged, let them wrong you more. This idea goes completely against what would make sense in our fleshly minds. Why would we ever do this? I think there are very practical implications as to why Jesus gives this instruction. As Jesus Christ took on the sins of the world upon Himself on the cross, dying in our place, we were forgiven so great a debt to God. |
Matthew 5:38–39
[38] “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ [39] But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. (ESV)
In our sin against God, He chose not to retaliate, but to lay down His life so that we can be in right relationship with Him. The whole Gospel points to the fact that Jesus did not deserve to die, but still laid down His life, so that we who committed the wrong can be brought into right relationship with Him. So now, if we are wronged, we must be quick to forgive, as we were forgiven so great a debt. This act of grace and mercy shown to the accuser may be the means in which they see Christ. Be quick to forgive, as Jesus Christ has forgiven you. Respond with any questions, prayer requests, or encouragement In Christ, Josh Hernandez | ![]() |
