Holy Is Your Name

Matthew 6:9

Most of us have heard the Lord’s Prayer before, but it is often not given much attention or thought. Why is that? If Jesus has given us a template of how to pray in a way that is honoring to  Him, why do we not use it? It is true that we can pray as we feel led, as it is a conversation between us and our God, but there are aspects of the Lord’s Prayer that point to the posture and structure of what our prayers should look like. Jesus begins by pointing to an address, making it clear that you are talking to the living God who is in Heaven. This should draw us all to humility, which we see in the next line, saying “hallowed be your name.” This points to the holiness of God, a proper address that He is God and we are not, as well as the fact that this God is holy.

Matthew 6:9

[9] Pray then like this:

 “Our Father in heaven,

 hallowed be your name. (ESV)

When we spend time in prayer, we often forget the reality that the God of the Universe, the Creator of Heaven and Earth is the same God we are in communication with. But what is beautiful about this is that the author of Hebrews tells us that we can draw near to this God in confidence because of the work that His Son did on the cross (Hebrews 10). So as we spend time in prayer this week, let's draw near to Him in honor and reverence, because He is a God worthy of it.
