The Blood That Poured

Jesus Sweats Blood in the Garden of Gethsemane - A Devotional From the Mad Charcoal Team

Hematidrosis - A medical condition, caused by overwhelming stress and anguish, causing one to sweat blood. The night of our Lord’s betrayal, Jesus spent the time in prayer, knowing the weight of the sins of the world would soon be put upon him. He knew He would suffer a great physical death, but also knew the weight of being forsaken by His Heavenly Father, leading him to a complete state of agony, causing Him to sweat blood.

Luke 22:41-42,44, “And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, saying, ‘Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.’... And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground” (Luke 22:41-42, 44, English Standard Version).

In knowing what great a deal of suffering was ahead of Him, He submitted to the will of the Father, knowing that the Father would bring the highest possible good out of a horrific situation. If Christ, at His weakest moment, in great agony, continued in submission to the will of the Father, how much more should we? Christ knew the greatest possible suffering anyone could ever suffer, the fullness of the wrath of God, would be put upon Him, but willingly submitted to this will. We may suffer greatly in this life. We may go through trial or unknown, but we must keep the words of Jesus, saying “Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done” (Luke 22:42).

If we know that in all things God works all things together for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28), shouldn’t we submit to the fullness of God’s will? How much better is His way than ours!

As you face trial, surrender it to the will of the Father. Live in the faith of the promises of our great Heavenly Father that He will never leave or forsake His children (Deuteronomy 31:6).
