Joined In Tribulation

After being scourged and forced to carry His cross to the place where He would die, Christ’s strength ran low. With no strength left in His physical body, He was in desperation for help to get the cross to Golgotha, the hill where He soon breathed his last. As a man named Simon was witnessing the struggling Messiah, the Roman soldiers convinced him to help Jesus carry the cross.

Mark 15:21

And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. (ESV)

How great was the suffering of Jesus Christ, that as He was lead to His death, the cross was collapsing over Him. At a moment of complete weakness and desperation, the help of a random man witnessing the catastrophe, lead the accomplishing of the greatest work of all time. As Christ died on the cross and rose from the dead, sin and death was defeated, bringing life to all people who put their faith in Christ and repent from their sin. We see how through God’s sovereignty, he uses ordinary men to work in the world to bring out His greatest saving purposes.
