Pierce The Darkness

Matthew 5:14-16

How often do you think of yourself as a light? More often than not, we find ourselves walking through the motions of our everyday lives, living in our normal routines, giving little thought to the spiritual reality that we are called to be lights in this present world. This example of putting a lamp under a basket demonstrates waste of intended purpose. We were created to give God glory in everything that we do, including our witness in this dark world. If you are in a dark room and you turn on a flashlight, it will be very evident to those in the room where this light is coming from. The Christian life is marked by fruit, as Jesus says, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35, English Standard Version).

Matthew 5:14–16

[14] “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. [15] Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. [16] In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (ESV)

The light we shine is fueled and sustained through the Gospel, the ongoing meditation that we were brought from death to life, being set free from condemnation and being granted eternal life. This message is what causes this light to shine. How could we not love others after being shown a tremendous amount of love from our Heavenly Father? How could we remain selfish when the God of the Universe came down as a servant, laying down His life for ours? Meditate on the Gospel truths, letting the light of Christ shine through us.
