Quiet Faith
Matthew 6:16-18
Are your good deeds done to be seen by others, or are they done to be seen by God? Jesus is addressing the practice of fasting, which is the practice of refraining from food for the purpose of being drawn to the Lord in prayer due to dependence and weakness. Jesus points now to the temptations that can arise when fasting, such as, making a big deal about how poorly you feel. The counter to this is to avoid sharing with others that you are fasting, as the purpose is not to look more righteous, but to depend on the Lord. | ![]() |
Matthew 6:16–18
[16] “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. [17] But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, [18] that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. This hidden fasting is something of great value to the Lord because it demonstrates a pure devotion that is focused not on our good works, but our desperation for the Lord’s help. Whether it is fasting or spiritual disciples, be cautious of the heart behind them. Is it for God, or is it for your own glory? Respond with any questions, encouragement, or prayer requests.
