The Heavy Cost Of Hidden Sin
Psalm 32:1-5
Do you struggle confessing sin, not only to God, but to others as well? David paints a clear picture of the reality of the graceful conviction of God. David loses his physical strength, becoming weak, as the indwelling sin in his life is consuming him. Instead of exposing it and bringing it to the light, he kept it in, allowing it to affect him day and night. With a clear picture of how confession brings forgiveness and freedom, why would we ever neglect confession? One reason is due to the pride of man, that when sin is exposed, we care more about what others think, rather than resting in the righteousness that Christ accomplished for us on the cross. Or, maybe it is “too great a sin” that God couldn’t possibly forgive you for. | ![]() |
Psalm 32:1-5
[1] Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
[2] Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
[3] For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.
[4] For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah
[5] I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah (ESV)
![]() | When we hold this perspective, we minimize the work of Christ. If we truly believe that Jesus is God, that he died and rose from the dead, satisfying the entire wrath of God, how could we possibly think our sin is “too great” for him to forgive us from. If we do not believe we could be forgiven, we miss out on one of the greatest promises found in scripture, that “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Expose your sin, bring it to the light, allow the forgiving work of Christ to clear your conscience, remembering that “as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:12).
